In over ten years of breeding French Bulldogs I have seen color trends come and go. Lilacs, Isabellas, New Shades, Rojos, Fluffies — every year there is something new capturing buyers attention. But one color has never left the top of the list. Not once. Blue French Bulldogs have been the most requested, most searched, and most loved color in the breed for as long as I can remember — and there are very good reasons for that.

What Makes a French Bulldog Blue?

A Blue French Bulldog carries two copies of the dilution gene, known as the d allele. When a dog inherits two copies — one from each parent — written as dd in genetic testing, the black pigment in the coat is diluted, producing that stunning steel gray coat we call blue. The shade can range from a deep dark gray that almost looks black in low light to a lighter silvery blue that is breathtaking in natural sunlight.

Their eyes are typically light — often gray, green, or blue — and their nose, eye rims, and paw pads will show a grayish blue pigmentation rather than the standard black you see in traditional colored Frenchies.

Why Do Buyers Always Come Back to Blue?

There is something about a Blue French Bulldog that is simply timeless. The cool, sleek coat paired with those light striking eyes creates a look that is both exotic and elegant at the same time. Unlike some of the newer color trends that appeal to a specific buyer, blue appeals to almost everyone — from first time Frenchie buyers to experienced collectors who have owned every color in the book.

In my years of breeding I have placed puppies of nearly every color imaginable. And without fail, every single year, blue remains the color people ask about most. It is not just popularity — it is a deep, lasting love for this color that never fades.

Blue and Tan — Taking It Even Further

When you combine the blue dilution gene with the tan point gene, you get the gorgeous Blue and Tan French Bulldog — a steel blue body with warm tan markings above the eyes, on the cheeks, chest, and legs. This color combination is incredibly striking and has become one of the most requested variations we produce. The contrast between the cool blue coat and the warm tan points is absolutely stunning and photographs beautifully.

Is the Blue Gene Harmful?

This is one of the most common questions I get and the answer is no — the blue dilution gene itself does not cause health problems in French Bulldogs. There is a condition called Color Dilution Alopecia that exists in some dilute colored dogs of certain breeds, but responsible breeding, proper health testing, and selecting dogs from healthy lines greatly minimizes any risk. Every blue puppy at Miami French Bulldogs comes from health tested parents and goes through our full health panel before going home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Blue French Bulldogs

Are Blue French Bulldogs purebred? Yes. Blue is a naturally occurring color in French Bulldogs caused by a recessive dilution gene. A properly DNA tested blue Frenchie from a reputable breeder is 100% purebred AKC registered.

How much does a Blue French Bulldog cost in Florida? Blue French Bulldogs from health tested, reputable breeders in Florida typically range from $4,500 to $7,000 depending on gender, bloodlines, and markings. Blue and Tan puppies tend to be on the higher end due to the additional tan point genetics involved.

Are Blue French Bulldogs good family dogs? Absolutely. Color has zero effect on personality. Blue Frenchies are just as loving, playful, and affectionate as any other French Bulldog. They are wonderful with children, adaptable to apartment living, and thrive on human companionship.
